Lung Transplant Program
Lung transplantation is the surgical replacement of either one (single) or two (double) badly diseased lungs with healthy lungs from a human organ donor. Transplantation is done for a variety of conditions - including emphysema, pulmonary fibrosis, cystic fibrosis, and primary pulmonary hypertension. Transplantation allows patients with debilitating lung disease to return to happy, productive lives. The success of lung transplantation has led to expanded indications for transplantation and, unfortunately, an inadequate supply of donor lungs to meet the demand. As an alternative, procedures such as lung reduction surgery and pulmonary thromboendarterectomy are being developed and can be offered to some patients with severe emphysema and other debilitating lung conditions.

Did you know?
Your lungs take oxygen from the air you breathe and put it into your blood. If you added up the surface area your lungs use for this purpose, it would be as big as a tennis court. |
