Medical Tests Frequently Required

Testing Required DURING the Transplant Evaluation
Test Who schedules? Information Obtained
Chest radiograph (xray) Primary Care Physician or Transplant Coordinator Provides current view of patient's heart and lungs and is used as a historical baseline.
Blood tests Transplant Coordinator Provides information to assist in determining:
  • how well a patient's other organs function - such as kidneys and pancreas,
  • whether a patient has been exposed to common viruses
  • the info necessary to match organs to recipients
Alpha Fetoprotein (AFP) Transplant Coordinator This screening test for liver cancer is repeated every six months.
Urinalysis Transplant Coordinator Provides a physical, chemical or microscopic examination of urine.
Drug Screening Transplant Coordinator This test screens for the presence of illicit drugs and/or other drug abuse.

Note: The Transplant Coordinator will work with referring physician offices to obtain test results from previous recent testing to reduce the testing required at and following the evaluation.

Test Who schedules? Information Obtained
TB Skin Test Patient though Primary Care Physician Provides information regarding the patient's exposure to tuberculosis and is used as a historical baseline.
Dental Services:
Dental Exam (need dental clearance every year)
Patient through private dentist. To ensure the patient's dental health. Dentist must send letter including the date of the exam, the date the dental work was completed and address the condition of the patient's oral health.
Pelvic Exam & Pap Smear (Annually)
FEMALE PATIENTS - ALL
Patient through Primary Care Physician This is a screening test for reproductive cancer and/or sexually transmitted diseases.
Mammogram (Annually)
FEMALE PATIENTS - OVER 40 YEARS
Patient through Primary Care Physician To ensure the patient has no undetected breast mass.
Cardiac Testing Patient through Primary Care Physician Provides information to ensure patient has no undetected heart issues that may prevent transplantation.
Pulmonary Function Test (PFT) Patient through Primary Care Physician Provides one indication of the patient's current lung capacity and function, and the extent of damage to their lungs.
Liver Ultrasound with Doppler Patient through Primary Care Physician Provides information on potential masses, blood vessels which may have clotted, or fluid in the abdomen.

Note: Patients will be given written orders for the tests listed above with instructions to complete testing through their physicians and dentists. As testing is completed the results need to be sent to the Transplant Coordinator at the address shown below. Occasionally, Transplant physicians will require some testing be performed at the University of Michigan Health System. Patients will be advised when that is required. Additional testing may be ordered by physicians upon medical examination.
